I stole my oatmeal, so it was probably doomed from the start.I'd been thinking about oatmeal since the day before. One of the other assistants was eating some for breakfast. She's an assistant who actually belongs to one person, not a general assistant like myself. I can't decide if this is lucky for her or horribly tragic. Untill I do, I'll make sure I'm free-range. Anyway, her oatmeal seemed so satisfying that I couldn't bring myself to eat my plain little strawberry yogurt. I went hungry until lunch.
I knew my roommate had oatmeal. I'd seen it, shoved next to my cans of beans and corn. This is what I generally eat: beans and corn and rice. I call it fuel, not food.
I was hoping he had brown sugar oatmeal or some sort of cinnamon. Instead he had a fruit and cream variety pack. I'm generally not a fan of dried fruit thrown into my food, but I was so desperate for oatmeal, that I snagged a 'Peaches and Cream'. It was a dinosaur egg box, meaning that dinosaurs are supposed to birth themselves within my oatmeal, as I watch with waiting spoon.
I made myself wait until ten o'clock. Wait and type and dream of oatmeal. Finally, I got up and went to the office kitchen. I opened my bag of oatmeal and poured it into a not-quite-styrofoam coffee cup, trying not to get too anxious over the chunks of dried peaches. It smelled good. Peachy, with a slight whiff of cinnamon.
Then I added the hot water. We have a water cooler that dishes out near boiling water, in case you want tea, so this was a fairly easy task. Except, for some reason, I added much more than the 'up to 1/3 cup' of water that the directions called for. Maybe I thought it said up to 3 cups. I'm not sure. Anyway, my peach chunks were swimming and my little chunks of oat were swimming and my dinosaurs- wait-
THERE WERE NO DINOSAURS!
That's right, there were no dinosaurs in my oatmeal. Not even one soggy stegosaurus.
So, I poured out as much extra water as possible (and half of the cinnamon with it, I am sure) and took my oatmeal back to my cubicle. It was very tasty, but the magic was gone.
